What is a Listserve?
"An electronic mailing list, a type of Internet forum, is a special usage of e-mail that allows for widespread distribution of information to many Internet users. It is similar to a traditional mailing list — a list of names and addresses — as might be kept by an organization for sending publications to its members or customers, but typically refers to four things: a list of e-mail addresses, the people ("subscribers") receiving mail at those addresses, the publications (e-mail messages) sent to those addresses, and a reflector, which is a single e-mail address that, when designated as the recipient of a message, will send a copy of that message to all of the subscribers." --Wikipedia.com
What does all that mean?
You can use one email address for your entire school staff by creating a listserve.
You can create a listserve for your school or department by following a few simple procedures:
- You will need a name for your list. Example: the name of your school or department! (Music, Amherst, SDHS)
- In Knox County Schools, we name all of our lists knox_(your choice of name).
- You will need at least one administrator for your list. The administrator will subscribe and delete users as well as moderate email traffic.
- You will need an excel spreadsheet or a tab delimited text file with the email addresses of your all staff in one column. (This can be requested from ENA for each school by using the Directory Search. Other departments will need to create their own list.

- Email will be addressed to knox_(listname)@lists.k12tn.net
- CAUTION: All lists will be setup as private lists to prevent locating messages in online searches. Email sent to a public list can be "Googled" and read by anyone with internet access.
- Administrators with appropriate password access can manage their lists by using the following url:
http://lists.k12tn.net/mailman/admin/knox_(listname)
- Send an email to Joyce Hausman (hausmanj@k12tn.net) which includes the listed information and an attachment of email addresses for your department. Schools can simply request all staff be added.
- Wait for a return email from ENA/Joyce Hausman that will contain your address, password and instructions for accesing the administrative pages.
